Dove: Retouched Photos
08May08

Dove’s under fire as of late because of a photo retouch scandal! Annie Liebovitz is stating, firmly, that no bodies/photos were retouched. Thanks to Jolie Nadine for the full story here. I’m going to go with their official statement – that the photos were not digitally altered. Although I honestly believe that the message is more important as a whole – love yourself and your body and quit trying to live up to stick-thin ideals. Sometimes it’s like the do-gooders of the world get the most heat.

from the article — “Do you know how much retouching was on that?” Pascal asked. “But it was great to do, a challenge, to keep everyone’s skin and faces showing the mileage but not looking unattractive.”
How indeed did our idea of beauty become so distorted. We went from the equally disturbing 50’s-ish sweater girl with the pointed boobs to the Twiggy look of the 60’s with greatly exagerated features and unhealthy weight. Somewhere it seems our pop culture chose to use female models as an art form and we licensed the media to present said form in unrealistic, unhealthy walking ads for a product that dismisses the woman within. I applaud Dove’s campaign and sincerely hope some idiot didn’t decide to undermine Annie Liebovitz’s credibility by using digital enhancement to her excellent photographs!
